This Sceptred Isle –
The Empire

The third and final book in the trilogy called, This Sceptred Isle. It begins with the English invasion of Ireland in 1169, an event which would lead to Ireland becoming the first British colony. It tracks the people who went out to explore & reminds us that for the most part, they did not know what they would find. It answers the big questions: was the British Empire simply asset stripping by investors, or was there far more to it than that? What about slavery? How many? How were they treated?  And what about the white slaves, shipped out to the colonies from Bristol? At its height, The Empire covered a quarter of the world, 440 million people – that’s more than live in Europe even today. Every port in the world had ships flying the British ensign. An empire this size had never before been seen.  Then why did it crumble? This Sceptred Isle is a book of questions and answers.  Most of all it is the story of one of the most remarkable tales in history.
